English Pronunciation for Business

We have resources for businesses and individual business people. Our goal is to empower people with clear speech. Clear speech also improves listening skills. Both of these are powerful assets in the workplace.  Learn more about Speaking with American English Rhythm and ways to Speak Now. Try out the new Small talk conversations: the weather.

Formal and Informal Speech for Business

In American English pronunciation, there are many reduced and blended sounds when people speak informally. However, to present a positive image for business, you will want to speak clearly. This means that you should focus your pronunciation study on sound lists (rather than rhythm). You may still need to reduce or increase some sounds of letters. For instance, the American T and L sounds are slighter (less pronounced) than in many languages, yet our R is stronger than in some languages--especially the R in the middle or end of words.

Being clear and consistent with your sounds will give you a voice that others admire.

For business, do not bother with reducing and blending smaller words--unless your work environment is very relaxed or you want to create that image.

Speak informally in business situations that call for it--for instance, when telling a story or making a joke.

Remember that Americans speak smoothly. Improve sounds before rhythm for business, but do not speak in a choppy way! Let the words flow.
