Pronunciation: Pronouncing Final Letters
When
there are 2 consonants at the end of a word, such as "ct" or "nd," it
is important to speak the final sound. Americans often speak final
sounds softly, but the sound does need to be there. Common combinations are these: ct, sk, ft, pt, st and nd. "Ts" also occurs often with plural words or verbs. A few of these combinations have very small T (or D) sounds in the plural: ct, ft, pt and nd. When some Americans speak, you may not hear the sound at all. It happens very quickly as the 3 consonant sounds, "cts," "fts," pts" or "nds" are spoken almost at once. To make the "ts" sound, lightly tap your tongue on the ridge behind your teeth and then relax the tongue into the S position. |
